Background of the Study
Language planning is crucial for the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages, particularly in literary forms. In Benue State, Tiv language literature embodies the rich cultural narratives and oral traditions of the Tiv people. Efforts to plan and standardize the Tiv language have involved developing literary guidelines, creating standardized orthographies, and supporting the production of Tiv literary works (Agba, 2023). Such initiatives are designed to provide a cohesive framework for writers, educators, and publishers, thereby enhancing the quality and consistency of Tiv literature. By fostering a standardized literary language, these policies aim to boost readership, preserve cultural heritage, and encourage creative expression. However, the tension between standardization and dialectal diversity remains a challenge. This study appraises language planning strategies for Tiv literature in Benue, examining how policy initiatives influence literary output and cultural preservation, and identifying both successes and shortcomings in the process (Okorie, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite proactive language planning measures, Tiv literature in Benue faces challenges related to inconsistent standardization and limited institutional support. Variations in dialect and divergent literary practices often undermine the effectiveness of planning efforts, leading to fragmented literary output. This study addresses these issues by investigating how language planning policies affect Tiv literature, identifying obstacles in implementation, and exploring strategies to enhance literary cohesion and cultural continuity (Agba, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of language planning on Tiv literature.
To identify challenges in standardizing Tiv literary works.
To propose strategies for improved literary consistency.
